Flower

What do you get when Hippies, Environmentalists, and Asians come together? A videogame experience that is so far beyond me that my mind could never fathom anything like it. Flower is a visual, audio, interactive escape for the PS3 developed by California based thatgamecompany. It was released February 12th of this year to a warm reception and is available as a download through the Playstation Network. The gameplay is very simple it takes advantage of Sony's sixaxis motion controls in the PS3 controller which allows you to control a flower petal, guiding it with a gust of wind through blighted, brown landscapes. As the petal touches other flowers, you gradually bring the landscape back to life and trees, grass burst into color. Confused? Doesn't sound much like a videogame? Your right but this is 2009 and that world you brought "life" to with that one petal soon becomes very industrial. This game is more than a game its about climate change and about changing and improving the situation which in turn makes you feel quite good over how you've renewed life that was destroyed by industrialization. Very 2009.
This may sum it up a bit better...

Remix My Gorillaz?

In 2005 Gorillaz put out their exciting sophomore album Demon Days, featuring awesome electro-pop beats, spacey mellow raps, and even an ongoing story about a fictional group of people who worship a giant mountain called Monkey.  Then in late 2007, the Gorillaz boys: 2D, Russel, Noodle and Murdoc released D-Sides, a nice compilation of 23 tracks from the Demon Days recordings.  Most of the songs on D-Sides are simply tracks that didn't make the final cut, or alternate versions of songs that made the album, but the others are a fair number of remixes from the likes of Soulwax and Hot Chip.  While these remixes might not be club bangers tearing up the dance scene, they are cool and groovy takes on some of the better songs from a great album.  Here's a selection of those remixes, happy Thursday!

Check out the Gorillaz website for more info on their eventual third album, a few movie projects they have in the works, and just to enjoy their very complex and in-depth flash site: featuring all sorts goodies, games, and weird little secrets about the band.

Punk is where the Heart is

Nothing like a little good old punk rock to liven your mood after yet another dismal valentine's day, right?  Teenage Heart, rockin out of Asheville North Carolina, are here to mend that damaged psyche.  These five guys are silly, heavily tattooed dudes who want nothing more than to give you a great show, and maybe even make you laugh a little along the way.  Inspired by the likes of Blackflag, Facetoface, The Descendents and Alkaline Trio, Teenage Heart does their very best to bring you enjoyable tunes with a little post-teen angst that are short, sweet and to the point with sometimes downright ridiculous lyrics.  Unfortunately this great little band has recently broken up to pursue other musical heights, which I realize sort of makes this 'new' post obsolete... I just figured people outside of the general Asheville area should hear these guys and enjoy some good tunes.  Here are three great tracks from their one and only album, Friends with Benefits, which is available on iTunes for a mere $7.

So help support this great unknown band, check their album, dig their MySpace, and if you ever happen to be visiting Asheville stop by Empire Tattoo, most of them work there and produce some amazing artwork!

Youth In Revolt

Good ol' wholesome Michael Cera. Even when hes flipping out on set he's still so genuine and you can't help but not take him seriously. This dude will forever be George Michael to me. This episode occured on the set of the new film The Youth In Revolt slated to hit theatres sometime this 2009. Alongside Michael Cera, Steve Buscemi and New Jersey's very own Ray Liota will be supporting actors in the film.

"If this movie is worth watching it'll be a f*ckin' miracle because it'll be the first time in history that a movie made by amateurs was any good at all and my hearts in it and you guys step on my heart everyday, you know." - Michael Cera

Estelle Bennette 1941-2009

Estelle Bennett, former member of the legendary 60s girl group The Ronnettes and sister of Ronnie Spector, has died at her home in New Jersey at the age of 67. Estelle leant her vocals to the 1964 hit Be My Baby which is regarded by many to be one of the greatest pop songs of all time; John Lennon and Brian Wilson concur. Also, on their track Baby, I Love You, Leon Russell is featured on the Piano and Cher lends her voice to the tune. Their success is mostly attributed to their producer Phil Spector, who was a pioneer of the 60's girls groups. The Ronnettes had a "bad girl" image thanks to their beehive hairdids, dark eye liner, and tight skirts. The 60's girl groups have a great influence on me and its sad when anyone of the greats passes. Estelle you will be missed.

Who the F is SantoGold?

so as you clearly have already noticed, the name of this post is "Who the F is SantoGold?" one may ask, "what kind of question is this? have the guys at ECO been living under a rock for the past year and a half, that they don't know who SantoGold is?" well here is the answer to your inquiries. the artist responsible for such '08 hits as the oh-so-popular banger L.E.S. Artists, Creator, Shove it, Lights Out, and many more has officially changed her recording name to SantiGold - clever, huh? Santi has even gone so far as to have already changed her myspace page - although santogold.net is still up and running under the old name.
it may seem like such a pointless name adjustment. here's the story; Santo Gold - a.k.a. Santo Rigatuso - is a B-More-based jeweler/filmmaker/huckster, who apparently may only be known for this infomercial - according to pitchfork - or the 1985 seemingly hard-to-handle fighter/alien/wrestling movie Blood Circus.
honestly, with such confusion, I could see why she'd want to change her name. who would want to go around being confused for the guy from Blood Circus? my guess though, is that with this new name change, her music is also going to change drastically.

here are some of my favorite SantoGold tracks. I can only hope that SantiGold is just as entertaining.

SantoGold - Lights Out

SantoGold - L.E.S. Artistes (XXXChange mix ft. Movado)

SantoGold - Find A Way (Grame & Switch Mix ft. Kid Cudi)

Jokers of the Scene are BIG

Remember that movie BIG with Tom Hanks where this little dude wishes what almost every kid in the world wishes, to be "big"? Well i do and its in my top 10 movies that define the 80's. You know who else remembers it, the dudes from The Rub aka Harry and DJ Ayres. They chopped footage from the movie, basically BIG in seven minutes and scored it with Fool's Gold all-stars, Jokers of the Scene's jam Saggy Bottom Boys, to give us all a visual gasm.

Have you ever had a really big secret?

Lissy Trullie Live

This post in an introduction to one of New York's newest sexy songstresses - and my newest celebrity/rocker crush (sorry Chris Brown) - Lissy Trullie.  I suppose for many of you out there, this isn't exactly an introduction, as you may have seen her during her DJ days at Beatrice Inn, or maybe just hipstering around the city with the likes of Cory Kennedy or the Virgins.  anyways, to celebrate the release of her Self-Learner EP, Ms. Trullie will be playing tonight at the Mercury Lounge, along with Linfinity - think Anthony & the Johnsons meets downtown New York; Frankopolis - who I haven't heard yet; and Paul and the Patients - who just sounds really cool. Lissy Trullie & the Fibs make music that reminds us that it's still cool to have fun while you're making music.

it's bound to be a great show; Mercury Lounge is a really chill, smaller-sized venue that is sure to please. here's a preview of what you'll hear:

and some covers:

I Love College More Than Asher Roth

Ok, Blogger or web sheriff or whoever is taking down my posts, its getting old. Let me know how im fringing upon whosever copyrights so i don't infringe anymore or whatever im doing wrong; an explanation would be nice. My email address, since your too lazy to find it is FRANCISSTEEZ@YAHOO.COM. Holler at the kid.

Alright back to this Asher Roth jam thats so fire. Theres something about him that reminds me of Slim Shady, but more in a preppy white boy way, not in the i'm a gangster white boy way, ya know. MTV's all over this track so get ready for some heavy heavy rotation. He does sum up the collegeness pretty well tho...
"Time isn't wasted when your gettin wasted"
Heres the video.

Damn i miss being a full time student.

You dig that Undercrown shirt he rocks? Get all your Undercrown apparel via their webshop. click

Theres also a Jim Jones remix out on the internet (peep the hype machine for that), id post it but it may be taken down because you know how gangster those record labels are.

"LOOK at THAT HORSE"

I really just enjoy this youtube video. My friends at home have made it in on going joke... Using this sequence of phrases with things around like... look at that taco, all the cheese, ground beef, guacamole... actuallly they are telling me that this is a ... enchilada... all this will make sense after watching the video... i hope you all enjoy...

Interplanetary Awesomeness

So for my first overdose post I figured I'd go with an oldie but goodie, Mickey Moonlight (aka Midnight Mike)'s version of Sun Ra's 'Interplanetary Music' just puts me in the best of moods.  With great spacey sound and a killer saxophone solo mixed in, this track is the best to just lay back and enjoy the day to.  Mickey is the latest addition to powerhouse Ed Banger Records, and a fresh sound for that already stellar line up.  Here is the original tune:

and a great remix:

These two tracks, plus a SPA and Zongamin remix, can be found on the Interplanetary Music - EP. Check it out!

Also dig this groovy video, shot on a 16mm camera all around the world!

Überzone

This being my first post i decided to pick one of my new favorite DJ's. I know that this whole blog thing is all about the DJ's so heres one i learned of in the back of a mexican kitchen i work at in the lonesome city of Rochester. Everyone i work with being DJ's have guided me through their view of what a DJ is. Überzone is the shit, goofy looking white dude from Anahiem who knows how to bust the beats. Really heavy bass mixed with drum machines and random samples, his album Ideology, is a well rounded one that you can listen to all the way through. Check it out. Here are few of his tracks.......

"Remix" Thursday

today's edition of remix Thursday is more of an "inspiration Thursday." I was recently privilaged with being introduced to the 1982 Dario Argento film Tenebre. "Tenebrae follows a writer who arrives to Rome only to find somebody is using his novels as the inspiration (and, occasionally, the means) of committing murder. As the death toll mounts the police are ever baffled, and the writer becomes more closely linked to the case than is comfortable." Written by David Carroll {davidc@atom.ansto.gov.au} - from imdb.com. my good friend Amy came across this flick in a film and theory class at Pratt. I haven't seen it yet myself, but I've heard it's quite the trip, so put it on your Netflix list.
anyways, the real reason for this post is the soundtrack, which was done by 80s progressive rock band Goblin.

in their day, they were best known for their collaborative work with Argento, including such films as 1975s Deep Red, and 1977s Suspiria. the band primarily took got their influence from such bands as Genesis and King Crimson. they got their lucky break when composer Giorgio Gaslini - who was working on the score for Argento's Profondo Rosso (Deep Red) - quit the job, due to disagreements with Argento. to make a long story short, Goblin worked on the film, and eventually the soundtrack for Tenebre.
this is where it gets weird.

fast forward 25 years later; Justice releases their masterful album ✞, featuring the monster track Phantom Pt. I (and obviously Pt. II as well.)

well, as the saying goes "what goes around, comes around." influences cycle.
here is the title track from the Tenebre movie soundtrack back to back with Justice's Phantom Pt. I. see if you can tell where Justice gets their influence.

the simple art of sampling and mixing done up real nice by Justice.
