R.I.P. Cool Hand Luke 1925-2008

I'm sure you've all heard by now that Paul Newman died from his struggle with cancer on Friday at the age of 83. There's a nice obituary here that somehow does the impossible, summing up a man so mysterious in his graceful acting, heartfelt in his philanthropy, and passionate in his political activism. The world will be much less humble without Paul Newman, in a time when honesty and good will are needed more than ever. We've lost another handsome one.

Rest easy, ol' blue eyes.

Little Boots meddles with MGMT + Designer Drugs

Victoria Hesketh aka Little Boots is is at it again with her infamous youtube channel. Armed with her favorite toy, the Tenori-on she does a great mellow bedroom rendition of MGMT's summer anthem, Time to Pretend. We're all still patiently waiting for the Arecibo EP to drop November 11th. Mark it.

and even more exciting, Designer Drugs have done did a remix of the addicting Little Boots jam, Meddle. Yeaaaaa boyyyyy you know not to meddle with her heart or meddle with her mind.

The Future of Folk Music is Here

So, as usual, I was hella bored at work, and found myself surfing the net for random shit, when I came across this video for a "band" called The Trons.  Some of you out there may have already caught wind of this NZ band - aw yeeh, they're from N-Zed - but for most of you, here's an early look at what people can accomplish with A LOT of free time and creativity.

Leave-a-Penny-Take-a-Penny - Sort of...

So, everyone who's been to a deli, bodega, gas station, etc. knows the Leave-a-Pennie-Take-a-Penny tray - if you don't, the name is pretty self explanatory.  Anyways, if you head over to Chashama - 266 West 37th Street (map)- any artists are invited to partake in an exchanging of art.  Just like the leave-a-penny-take-a-penny tray, you can show up and donate, or exchange your own works of art for that of another artist.  The cool thing about it is you don't even need any money; it's all free.  The only thing they do ask of you to bring - other than brilliant works of art - is your contact info, so that when artists do exchange their work, they can also exchange their contact info as well.

The event - which started today - goes on until Wednesday, so if you are in need of getting your work circulated, or just wanna check out some good art by others in the same hustle as you, come through.  Who knows; maybe I'll trade some shit with you.

TRVSDJ-AM Plane Crash

THE DJ for the stars, DJ AM, and the one the only Travis Barker, are in critical condition after their private jet crashed in West Columbia, South Carolina hours after the two performed for thousands of South Carolina college students. The small aircraft which was carrying 6 passengers departed shortly before midnight for Van Nuys,Calif. when air traffic controllers noticed sparks. The Leer jet crashed killing 4 and leaving DJ AM and Travis at a burn center in Georgia in critical condition. The two had performed as a duo known as TRVSDJ-AM which fans and myself agree have a unique, intelligient, one of a kind sound. Travis Barker is up there among the drum kit greats and anything he touches is gold. AM has been on those ones and twos for the celebs for quite some time even having the pleasure of being inside Nicole Ricci and Mandy Moore and has a guest drop in an episode of Entourage. Keep them in your thoughts and the whole East Coast Overdose crew wish them a and their families the best of luck with a healthy recovery. They cant go out like Buddy Holly, please don't let them, theres way too much talent between the both of them.
Thanks to K-Lang for pointing this horrific news out to me.

Heres a visual dose of TRVSDJ-AM

Yo, It's fall. I love fall. If you need to bake something because it's fall, or you just like to bake, maybe you should bake this wonderful recipe from

"Chocolate Cherry Bread Pudding

1/2 loaf Zingerman's chocolate cherry bread, stale, cut into cubes
4 TBS. butter, melted
1/2 cup half and half
1/2 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
Scharffen Berger chocolate sauce (or the closest thing you can find)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter four 1-cup ramkeins.
2. Toss bread cubes with melted butter, set aside.
3. Whisk eggs with sugar. Add half and half and vanilla. Whisk until combined. Add to bread cubes and toss to coat. Set aside for 30 minutes or cover and refrigerate up to 1 day.
4. Press bread mixture into ramekins and pour remaining sauce over the top.
5. Bake until puffed and bubbly, 20-25 minutes.
6. Cool slightly and invert on plates. Drizzle (or dollop) with hot chocolate sauce." (

I don't typically post twice in one day, but I have just come across word that there's a free Bloc Party show tonight @ the Roseland Ballroom, here in the city.  All you's gotta do is RSVP - as usual - before it's too late.

And check out this video of some of the band members fucking around, trying to get the word out about the show:

Don't miss this!

Thursday's are for Remixes: Pt.III

Last week's installation of the newly popular Remix Thursdays came with a theme, and I happen to like things with themes - i.e. theme parties, theme parks, etc... So in light of last week's successful theme, I figured that this week, we'd go for a Classic Rock theme. All of the following remixes are songs that were originally popularized before the 1990s, but have been remixed by some of today's top remix artists - as well as some less known remixers.

Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City (Proper Villains Remix)

AC/DC - Thunderstruck - Crookers Remix

The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (Soulwax Remix)

Guns 'n Roses - Sweet Assed Child o' Mine (DJ Donna Summer Remix)

Journey - Don't Stop Believing (Andy Clockwork Remix)

The Rolling Stones - You Can't Always Get What You Want (2008 Soulwax Remix)

Marlena Shaw - California Soul (Diplo/Mad Decent Remix)

"Don't Draw Penises on my Banner!" - Matt from Matt & Kim

So, for the second time this week, I attended a free show from the amazing Brooklyn duo known as Matt & Kim, and let me tell you, it was much better than the first time.  This time, they played with The Cool Kids, and Flosstrradamus.

The Cool Kids were - to say the least - pretty fucking cool.  They bring a new hip hop sound similar to that of Kid Cudi, or maybe Lupe.  The dudes brought out a cool and diverse crowd, and it seemed as though everyone but me knew their lyrics.
After the Cool Kids played their set, it was time for Matt & Kim.  The crowd this time around was pretty much there just to see them, so their real fans showed their appreciation by moshing and crowd surfing - I took my turn at crowd surfing, and got dropped like in a bad teen movie.  But if you've never seen these two perform live, you're missing out big time.  Also, expect to get hit in the face, have a drink spilled on you, get moshed, etc.

Unfortunately, I was dancing way too hard to get any shots of Flosstradamus, but here's an idea of what they look like:

And check out who else was there checking out the show:

1/2 of Justice - Gaspard Augé
Gaspard was kind enough to kick it with me for a minute.  We enjoyed some good conversation, a cigarette or two, and exchanged information.  So look out for a word from the legendary DJ/Producer, and also keep an eye out for their upcoming DVD, comprised of live footage.

Your ears are gonna love a dose of this:
These tunes feature Flosstradamus remixes of both Matt & Kim and The Cool Kids as well as a solo track from The Cool Kids

Matt & Kim - Yeah (Flosstradamus Remix)
The Cool Kids - Black Mags
The Cool Kids - Pump Up The Volume (Flosstradamus Remix)

SoCo Music Experience Recap

the East Cost Overdose team

So my trip upstate proved to be a trip in itself.  First, I arrived in Oneonta over an hour late, due to the tardiness of the Adironack Trailways transportation service.  However, when I got to the illustrious house on 62 Elm Street, I was greeted by the open arms Mr. Meat.  ATW got me more wasted in all the 4 years I attended that party as a student - Mr. Meat should have some great pictures from the party for the flickr page up soon.
Anyways, what I'm really here to post about is yesterdays SoCo Music Experience, the most random upstate musical festival ever, headlined by MGMT - who couldn't make it, due to a broken foot injury sustained by their drummer - and JUSTICE.  Since MGMT couldn't make it, Brooklyn boy/girl duo Matt & Kim filled in, and pretty much kicked everyone's asses - metaphorically speaking.  The two put on such an energetic show, that they were the first real band of the day to play in front of an actual crowd.

Matt & Kim

If you ask me, I have no idea who else played, other than Lotus - the Philadelphia jam band - who also rocked their shit, and JUSTICE - who just happened to be playing a free show in the most random of all venues, for such a huge, well-known act.  Also a surprise, was another act from Brooklyn, NY, DJ Star Eyes.  She worked the bar all day, with a HUGE DJ set that had me dancing for hours.

DJ Star Eyes

Now I just can't get enough of free shows, and apparently neither can Matt & Kim.  The duo will be playing another free show, this time in the city - so no 3-4 hour commutes this time.  To R.S.V.P. click here.  Hurry up though, you don't wanna miss this opportunity.

We're Slackers/Remix Thursdays

Image copyrights to Justin Robinson
So, with most of the East Coast Overdose team out of town - shout out to BOneonta - I'd like to apologize for the lack of posts. Regardless, the show must go on. Now that it's Thursday, we'd like to bring to you the second installation of 'Remix Thursdays'. This week's installation comes with a theme, in light of the free Justice/MGMT show this weekend in Saratoga, at SPAC.  We've all been dosed with enough Justice and MGMT remixes - even a Justice remix of MGMT - to last a lifetime, but honestly, you can never really overdose.

So here's my Justice/MGMT themed remix playlist:
Justice - Phantom Pt.II (Soulwax Remix)
Soulwax - NY Excuse (Justice Remix)
MGMT - Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
The Klaxons - As Above, So Below (Justice Remix)
Justin Timberlake - Lovestoned/I Think She Knows (Justice Remix)
MGMT - Kids (Soulwax Night Bootleg Remix)
MGMT vs. Justice vs. Notorious B.I.G. - Nasty Feel (ddpesh Rework)
Immuzikation - O.M.T.t.P.

If you have a car, you better make that trip upstate.  It's not often that you'll get to see a free show like Justice/MGMT - haha, I'm even taking a bus up there.

Thirsty Girls Need Drinks

To update all those who missed out on last night's DOIY,Y?/Chemical Brothers party, it was fucking nuts.  I danced so hard, I lost my cell phone - if you don't see the connection, you probably don't know how to dance.  It took a while for the guys from DOIY,Y? to hit the tables, but when they did, shit blew up.  They played a couple of their own songs, they played some really good, kinda rare remixes, they played some Chemical Brothers, and everyone loved it.

Now, tomorrow begins a new chapter in annual New York events, as Bryant Park plays host to the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.  Fashion week - which is pretty much the U.S. Open of fashion - always brings great crowds of many different fashionable characters to the city.  This time around, I'll be there first hand to experience it, which means that you guys will be able to experience it - vicariously - with me.   This year features shows from such designers as Charlotte Ronson - yes, she's Mark Ronson's sister, and Samantha's twin sister - Rock & Republic, DKNY, Diane Von Furstenberg, Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto, Betsey Johnson, Michael Kors, Project Runway alum Malan Breton, and many more.  As usual, there will be an overabundance of beautiful women on hand, so if you can, come out and enjoy the festivities.

See you at Bryant Park.

Chemical Brothers Album Release Party ft. DIOY,Y?

The latest installation of the weekly Cheeky B*stard party packs a serious punch.  As you know, the East Coast Overdose team digs any good pond hopping tunes - see The British are Coming!! The British are Coming!! - so it's fitting that we let you know about the return of DIOY,Y?  The British electro punk/rock band makes their return to the NYC late night scene, with a DJ set at the Hiro Ballroom this thursday night.
More importantly, fellow Brits The Chemical Brothers will also be there, celebrating yesterday's release of their new album Brotherhood.
The Chemical Brother's have been around for years, so I don't really have to tell you about their sound.  But for those of you  who really don't know (pretty much if you've been living under a rock for the past 15 years or so) it's going to be fucking intense.
[I think it goes without saying] you don't want to miss this show.

And here's a quick dose for your ears:
"Does It Offend You, Yeah? - Weird Science"
And for your eyes:
The Chemical Brothers - Elektrobank (Directed by the AMAZING Spike Jonze, and starring the equally amazing Sofia Coppola)

Geography Anyone?!?

It has come to my attention recently that the American educational system is not up to par and those suffering the most are our countries youth. With all the political and religious problems in today's world i believe it is extremely important that the youth knows where these conflicts and important news stories are taking place. This is why myself and Nostradamus (aka Dylan Clark) have founded the Where is Butan? initiative. We are in the begginning stages of the initiative, step one is to get out message out to the public and inform them on how to get started. Step two includes our public outreach program where we come to your house in order to better educate the children, and those adults that need it, as to the geography of this fabulous world we live in. More information will be given soon and updates available weekly as our foundation is being built. If your interest in geography is overwhelming as we speak we do have a quick fix for you however, just pop over to Globe Game on

For more information please contact Mr. Meat at
