Love gets a dose of heavy bass bangers at this monthly dance affair brought to you by Trouble and Bass. Tonight sees a visit from the Orlando-based South Rakkas Crew, a duo who steep their dancehall- and grime-infused sound with fractured rhythms and heavy, heavy bass to get that lo lo lo. Also, Mr. party-rocking himself Dre Skull, bangs out some bang outs. Oh and big ups to Mad Decent.
$10 before midnight. Tickets

So my job sent me out to Red Hook, BK to scout some locations for an upcoming photo shoot. I didn't find what they were looking for, but here's a bit of what I did find:
All photographs taken by Justin Robinson
Red Hook, Brooklyn is an awesome combination of old old New York style, mixed with that new shit - but without going overboard and being obnoxious like so many other areas of the city that are currently in development - and it's also got a bit of the same hip street scene you might find in Williamsburg or Greenpoint. I suggest anyone who hasn't been out there recently - or ever - to go check it out.
And for your ears:

Just another reason why i love the fuck'n internet and youtube. I was sitting around BBQing the other evening with some heads and my friends like check this out. We all gather around his iphone because you know we live in the future now and the internets almost everywhere (and i stress ALMOST) so we preceded to watch the following and laughter over came the sound of sizzling meat.
that skateboard over there, thats my transportation unit.
So staying on the more reasons tip heres two more reasons why music is everything. The first jam Earth Wind and Fire's Reasons is my favorite of theirs. The beat and vocals are the tops. Enjoy this thoroughly.
Earth Wind and Fire - Reasons.mp3
and Cam'ron seems to never surprise with his samples but this was my summer jam when Purple Haze first dropped. You can find this album in my top 5 fav hip-hop albums and this song is just one of 24 reasons why. The production is just so well done on this track. Dipset!

So today I was feeling a bit down. I missed the last free movie of the summer at McCarren - which is also pretty much the end of McCarren Pool as a venue. I also missed what was probably one of the last summer nights of free beer at the Lazy Catfish. Luckily, I have Whitney Houston to cheer me up.
Remember the year 1987? Ms. Houston was on top of her game, and on top of the music charts, with her hit song I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). Well the song has been resuscitated and revived by remix artist OCD Automatic.
As if that wasn't awesome enough, I also somehow came across a surprisingly - but really not so surprising - great rendition of Ms. Houston's hit song, as performed by none other than David Byrne.
Cheers to Nate. He helped me with my 'ness when I fucked up my 'ness. Probably 'cause I failed those comp. classes at Hartwick. Good lookin' out.

It seemed like i had just laid my head down to sleep at 3am after a lush filled night when i heard the buzzing of my phone and who else is it but Barack Obama dropping me that text saying he had tapped Senator Joe Biden to be his vice presidential running mate. What a good decision that was; Biden is a well seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in Foreign Policy and defense issues which perfectly balances the democratic party ticket. And what a handsome ticket this is turning out to be. This is goin to make things quite interesting so stay tuned for some lame, stupid things McCain's going to say about this and maybe his vice presidential decision.
Reminder: Democratic National Convention is August 25th-28th in Denver and the Republican National Convention is September 1st-4th

With the summer winding down, most people are scrambling and scrounging around to live out their favorite summer activities. For me, it's been non stop BBQing. For those of you out there who share my passion, I've got the perfect remedy for your BBQing needs:
15 Minute Marinated Chicken:
1/4 cup of dijon mustard
2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
1-1/2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon of dried tarragon
1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
4 halves of chicken breast - boneless/skinless
Combine the first five ingredients, mixing well
Spread on both sides of the chicken
Place chicken on a plate
Marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes - or for several hours if you're up for it - in the 'fridge
Grill uncovered over medium coals, turning once for 10-15 minutes, or until juices run clear
What you do with the rest is up to you.

I dig all things digital a whole lot but i also dig things i can actually feel and touch like records, i dig textures. Paul Mawhinney born and raised in Pittsburg, Pa. has compiled the worlds largest record collection thru the years estimated at over 2.5 million records and its value is worth more than $50 million; dipstet! Ever since this onslaught of digital music downloads the vinyls have been quite neglected and this has forced Mawhinney to close his record shop and sell his collection also due to his current diabetes condition. He's asking for a measly $3 million for the entire collection so if you got some loot this is a better investment than real estate right now.
The Archive from Sean Dunne on Vimeo.
and for those of us who still like getting down with the vinyl it is Tuesday and that can only mean one thing, Disco Down @ Happy Ending. Free well vodka from 10:30-11:00 and all the fresh disco beats from that disco era. End your night with a happy ending.

Big ups to IFC for turning me onto quite a few great films late night on my couch and the 90's for producing the goodness. Last night i caught 1992's Roadside Prophets which stars John Doe and Adam Horovitz aka King of Ad Rock of Beastie Boys fame. Its more or less a modern adaptation of Easy Rider where Doe and Horovitz set out for the road staying at numerous Motel 9's on the way to dump a friends ashes in Nevada. The film is filled with some great random cameos from John Cusack to Timothy Leary and Adam Horovitz is a laugh riot throughout the entire film. Netflix this shit and get turned on.

Next Tuesday night, Santos' own Andrew W.K. will have his turn on the 1s and 2s - along with Spencer Sweeney.
The next night, Santos hosts hometown heros The Virgins , accompanied by The Young Lords - also a great NYC band, if you haven't already checked them out.
Check out my photography being used as a concert poster!
Don't I have copyrights?
And every Friday night, Santos' features hip hop sets by DJs Rich Medina and Q-Tip - of A Tribe Called Quest fame.
Also, look out for that Andrew W.K./B-Roc mixtape, dropping Sept. 15th. The tape will feature music from Andrew himself, B-Roc - over at LOLA (thanks for the info) - Andrew's artist Bad Brilliance, The Knocks, Samuel, and Julia and The Americans - who were featured at the Green Owl Records party this past Friday night. The records release - as with most records releases - does come with a release party. Held at Santos, the party will be Andrew's first live show at Santos EVER, and will also feature live music from Bad Brilliance and Samuel.
So go check that shit out already!

I like pickles and i like chicken but pickles on my chicken sandwich? i don't get all the hype for this plain bunned, two count pickle, Chick-Filet stealing, MacDonald Southern Style Chicken Menu Sandwich. Ive been up on my XXIX aka 2008 Olympics and the commercials are flooded with these MacDonald advertisements about this sandwich being so simply amazing. Simple it is and simple is all and for $3.29 nates not trying to drop dough on that, maybe on that dollar menu. Here's a coupon for a FREE Southern Style Chicken Sandwich at your participating Macdonalds but you have to buy a medium or larger beverage.
and i like wine...

Santogold - Pretty Green (The Jam Cover)
So last night, we went out to BK again, this time we rode the mysterious J,M,Z, train (no bike trips this time.) We didn't know what to expect, heading out to the Green Owl Record party, but once we stepped through the doors, we knew exactly what we were in for.
The London Souls - featuring my high school friend Tash on the guitar - killed it on stage. Tash was the kind of kid in high school who'd always be the most wasted kid at the party, and if there was a guitar around, you would think Jimi was reborn.

The So So Glos followed up with a great seat of fast paced, fist-pumping tracks. The usual assortment of Brooklyn girls were holding it down; kids were everywhere. Green Owl Records co-owner Ben Brewer was on hand. There were drinks, and free beers being handed out. Everyone enjoyed themselves - despite the unbearable heat.

Green Owl Records, a new by-artists-for-artists, eco-riendly record label, is hosting a party at 9:00 pm tonight at Brooklyn's Market Hotel. The party features sets from The London Souls, The So So Glos, and The Americans.
The label was started by The Exit front man Ben Brewer - older brother of good friend Hannah Bronfman, and lucky fiance of Maya Arular a.k.a. M.I.A. - and his buddys Steven Glicken and Ellenike Abreu. Green Owl is currently on the verge of dropping a hot new mixtape: The Green Owl Compilation.
The compilation album features tracks from such decorated recording artists as Feist, Bloc Party, Of Montreal, and Brewer's own The Exit. All proceeds from the album are put towards support for the EAC. Go out and cop the new freshness, and help spread environmental awareness at the same time.
I can't imagine Thieves Like Us needing any kind of introduction but if you haven't heard their alluring, eeriness sounds as of yet get on it; i mean Drugs In My Body is still on repeat. So their new EP drops today called Your Heart Feels and its music to my ears. The title track has that eerie feel but oh so addictive beat and will be a perfect compliment to these cool august nights out with drugs in the body. Go cop the EP digitally from iTunes or Beatport and you may have to step out and about for that. See you on East Side.

So last night, the East Coast Overdose team biked out to Williamsburg to check out the APW preParty, hosted by Antics. We started off the night enjoying the free vodka and Colt 45 tall boys.
The DJ sets started late, but Dave 1 - the one half of Chromeo - finally showed up with his brother A-Trak.
A-Trak was chill enough to kick it for a minute, while his brother Dave got the crowd jumping.Bloc Party's Kele Okereke showed up, did his thing on the 1 & 2s, bringing a completely different style and element to the DJ scene for the night. He played mostly remixes of the hottest songs being heard on the street. My good friend Wade Oats of The Virgins fame showed up, got us up to the DJ booth, and the East Coast Overdose crew got to hang out with Wade and Kele in the flesh. Kele was good enough to have a few words with and pose for pictures. Wade - as always - was very hospitable; he hung out with us, showed us a good time, and then cut it up on the tables. Wade threw on some rock to get people dancing in their pants.
As always the Brooklyn girls stole the show.
The team packed up and took off for the city.
